
BAL SENA
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
In the bitter war over Kashmir which took place between India and Pakistan in the year 1947-48, Jhangar was captured by the enemy with an aim to capture Naushera. The threat was imminent from the intruders and the deployment of Indian Army was already stretched.
At such a critical juncture, Brig Usman sought help from all quarters and even utilized school children to support logistic requirements of soldiers at the frontline. This is how Bal Sena came into existence.
EVOLUTION OF BAL SENA
The Bal Sena was raised by Brig Usman on 27 Dec 1947 to augment the administrative infrastructure and young volunteers came forward to offer their assistance.
Brig Usman's initiative included visiting schools and villages and motivating the young force to volunteer and participate in the war ahead. Initially the Bal Sena comprised of only 17 Bal Sainiks which later amassed as a substantial entity.
TRAINING AND ROLE
The Bal Sainiks were not only given weapon training but were also taught battle craft, handling of signal equipment and even assisted in logistic duties like carrying of ammuntion, ration, important messages etc. When Brig Usman planned for capturing Jhangar, he took 05 Bal Sainiks with him who assisted him throughout the battle.
ABSORPTION INTO REGULAR ARMY AND PRESENT STATUS
Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and General K M Cariappa ensured their absorption into regular Army through Regimental Centres.
Havildar Baldev Singh, resident of Garhi Village, Naushera left heavenly abode in January 2025. Presently Shri Basant Singh resident of Lam Village, Naushera is the only living member of the Bal Sena.
